Congress Has Big Questions for Big Oil

Political Play Action Map

As gasoline nears $4.00 a gallon, Congress has questions about Big Oil’s big profits.

On April 1, 2008, top executives of the country’s five biggest oil companies were questioned by U.S. lawmakers about the industry’s record profits.

Appearing before a House committee, the executives were pressed to explain why they should continue to get billions of dollars in tax breaks when they made $123 billion last year and motorists are paying record gasoline prices at the pump.
The executives said they know record fuel prices are hurting people, but argued it’s not their fault – that huge profits are in line with other industries.
As the aggregator demonstrates, Congress executed plays with high levels of engagement, while the oil executives responded entirely with conditioning plays. Congress focused its plays on the Freeze, Lure, Press, and Attack subclasses. However, Big Oil’s plays remained primarily in the Divert and Frame subclasses.
The plays on this map are all from April 1, 2008. Some of the events, however, are from prior.
